Aleksandra Ekster was born in 1882 in Russia into an upper-class Belarusian family. She was known as a Russian-French painter, graphic artist and theatrical designer associated with Futurism, Cubism and Constructivism movements. She began to study painting at Kiev Art School in the early years of the 1900s, and her painting studio became a gathering place for the intellectual elite of Kiev. She contributed to the Salon des Independants exhibitions in Paris in 1914, and was known to be a friend of Pablo Picasso, who introduced her to Gertrude Stein as well.
