Uber den Künstler

Erasmus Francisci (1627, Lübeck – 1694), also called Erasmus Finx, was a prolific polyhistor and is considered one of the most influential figures of the German Baroque period. He received his higher education at Lüneburg and Stettin. After studying law he travelled through Italy, France and the Netherlands. From 1657 he worked as a reader at Endter publishing at Nürnberg, where he also published some of his books. In 1668 he was appointed a counsellor to count Heinrich Friedrich zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg.

He wrote a large number of books, using many pseudonyms. In 1670 his Neu-polirter Geschicht- Kunst- und Sittenspiegel ausländischer Völker was published at Endter publishing. It is the first and only edition of an illustrated encyclopedic survey of the cultures, traditions, manners and customs of non-European peoples, in particular the Japanese and the Chinese.
