Francisco Álvares (c. 1465 in Coimbra – 1536~1541, Rome) was a Portuguese missionary and explorer. He was a chaplain-priest and almoner to King Manuel I of Portugal. In 1515 was sent to Ethiopia, accompanied by the Ethiopian ambassador Matheus. In 1520 he reached the court of the emperor of Ethiopia where he befriended several Europeans, including Pero da Covilha and Nicolao Branceleon. After remaining six years in Ethiopia, Alvares returned to Lisbon in 1526 or 1527. In 1533 he accompanied Dom Marthino de Portugal to Rome, where he delivered a letter of the Ethiopian emperor to Pope Clement VII. In 1540 Álvares’ work A True Relation of the Lands of Prester John of the Indies was published, describing the earliest detailed account of Ethiopia to be based in part on first-hand knowledge. Therefore it is the most important primary source for the history, culture and topography of Ethiopia before it was invaded by Islamic troops under Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi of Somalia in 1529.
