Johanna Anna Maria (Hannie) Bal was a Dutch artist. She was a part of the Verve movement. She was born in The Hague to a well-off family. She attended the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, There she felt in love with her portrait paint teacher Willem Schofer. He was a painter that belonged to the Nieuwe Haagse School group. He was 23 years older then she was.
Hannie Bal produced paintings, watercolours and drawings. Most of her works are interiors, non figurative works, city scapes and still lifes. She worked in her hometown The Hague and Voorburg. Together with her husband and fellow artists she founded the Verve Group. Her work is included in the New Hague School (active in the 1950s and 1960s with members like Harm Kamerlingh Onnes, Paul Citroen, Co Westerik, Willem Hussem, Jan Cremer and Chris de Moor). She was as well een member of The Hague Kunstkring.
