Uber den Künstler

Heinrich Bürkel was a German genre and landscape painter. He was born in 1802 in Rhenish Bavaria. So early as his eleventh year he came into conflict with the police on account of a caricature of Napoleon. At age twenty he turned to art and learned the technicalities of oil paintings. He was inspired by Dutch 17th century masters. He was active in Italy from 1827 until 1854. After returning from Rome in 1832, where he spent his time from 1823 to 1832, he became a popular artist. Bürkel was part of the Münchener Malerschule, the name given to a group of painters who worked in Munich of were trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Munich between 1850 and 1918. The Munich school is characterized by a naturalistic style and dark chiaroscuro. Typical subjects are landscapes, portraits, genre scenes, still life and historical scenes. He was an honorary member of the Academies of Munich, Dresden, and Vienna. He died at Munich in 1869.
