Uber den Künstler

Jan Koster (Kampen, 1959) lives and works in Amsterdam. He studied at the University of Amsterdam, and trained to be a photographic designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Jan Koster has been photographing Dutch landscape since the early nineties. Before he applied himself to the Dutch coastline in the series Dutchscapes, Koster created a series Riverscapes. His most favourite landscape was the IJssel river delta near Kampen.

He began registering the landscape in photo collages, a technique he developed during the construction of a new bridge over the river IJssel. He glued photos together to form one landscape, with slight colour and compositional differences between the various shots. Koster’s landscape collages were a raging success. In the 1990s, there was a tendency to compare photography, and in particular landscape photography, to painting. He also created a series Havana, a city that raised his interest, since he married a Cuban immigrant. His series of Riverscapes, Dutchscapes, Havana, and thereafter Neighbours observed; a summer in Amsterdam were published as books.
