Johan Wilhelm Schotman (1892 Hoogeveen - Zwolle 1976) was neurologist, belletrist and museum director. He started painting when he was 50 years old and he was taught to paint by W. Dooijewaard in Blaricum. He created still lives, portraits, genre paintings and Chinese subjects. Schotman was a teacher at the Gerard Terborch art school in Zwolle, where he was director from 1958 to 1964. In 1957 he became museum director of the Provinciaal Overijssels Museum in Zwolle. He also was interested in philosophy and had a thorough command of the Chinese language. In addition Schotman translated literature of Malraux and Durrell and he wrote poetry, plays, radio plays and novels.
