THE PLANNING OF LOCHEM "Den muel Wagen ghepractiseert, bij den grooten ingenieur Pompeus", copper engraving made for Ludovico Guicciardini's "Beschrijvinghe van alle de Neder-landen" published by Johannes Janssonius in 1652. Coloured by hand at the time (?). Dim. 23 x 31 cm. The scene is set in the midst of the Eighty Years' War. We see the town of Lochem, besieged by Spinola, with a horse-driven mobile mill in the foreground. These mills, invented by Pompeo Targone, were used to grind flour in the field to make bread for the soldiers with whom Spinola laid siege to Lochem and Groenlo in July and August 1606. Price: Euro 125
