Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove, approx. 1820. Drawing in watercolour over pencil. Size: 11 x 16 cm. Halfway through the 17th century the cityscape became an independent genre in the Netherlands. Cities like Amsterdam, Haarlem and The Hague became popular subjects for paintings. Cityscape painters did not always accurately depict reality. Sometimes facades were completely imagined or made more beautiful than they were, or elements were included that did not correspond with reality. The romantic painter / draftsman Bartholomeus van Hove (1790-1880) here, gives us a lovely insight into a somewhat idealized town, in which elements from Haarlem and The Hague seem to have been used. Van Hove played an important role in the development of Dutch 19th-century painting through his many students. He was able to teach his skills to a large group of artists, of whom especially Johannes Bosboom and Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch would become widely known. Price: Euro 750, - (incl. frame)
