    ONE OF THE EARLIEST MAPS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA "Indiae Orientalis Insularumque Adiacentium Typus" It is also one of the most important to appear in Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Published in Antwerp, 1587. Ortelius includes early European depictions of both Japan and China and is the first to name Formosa (Taiwan). The Philippines and East Indies or Spice Islands are shown based upon Portuguese and Spanish sources, and before their penetration by the Dutch. Japan is shown in kite form, as a large oval island with chains of smaller islands to the north and south. The map also shows parts of the American northwest, including the cities of Quiuira, Cicuie and Tigeux. Verso French text. Original hand colouring. Size: 34,9 x 49,8 cm. Price: Euro2.850,- (excl.     Abraham Ortelius wurde 1527 in Antwerpen geboren.
    Er war ein berühmter Kartograph und Geograph aus dem Süden der Niederlande.
    Ortelius war der Begründer des modernen Atlas und kann als einer der großen Geographen seiner Zeit angesehen werden.
    Die Familie von Ortelius stammte aus der deutschen Stadt Augsburg.
    1547 trat Ortelius als Kartenmaler in der Saint-Lucas-Gilde in Antwerpen auf.
    Nach 1576 lebte er aus politischen Gründen kurz in England und Lüttich.
    Danach kehrte er nach Antwerpen zurück, wo er bis zu seinem Tod 1598 lebte
