It’s almost time to immerse yourself in the newest developments in contemporary art. Gallerease will provide you with a preview of three of the best works of Laurence Aëgerter, Bertien van Manen and Diana Scherer offered by Seelevel Gallery that are on show at the 18th edition of Art Rotterdam.

Beyond Maps and Atlases
Bertien van Manen about Beyond Maps and Atlases: ‘At first, working in Ireland I wasn’t sure what I was looking for. My husband had died. I dispensed with the people and reflected on the atmosphere. I was guided by a feeling and a search, a longing for some kind of meaning in a place of myths and legends. There was mystery and endlessness at the edge of a land beyond which is nothing but a vast expanse.’

Beyond Maps and Atlases is the first body of work made in Ireland by the internationally renowned Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen. It traces her journey across the island over one and a half year. Van Manen’s Ireland is imbued with both a strong sense of place and an attendant sense of mystery. Van Manen’s restless imagination has, in the past, taken her to Russia, China and the Appalachians. Beyond Maps and Atlases continues, and deepens, that sense of a continuous journey into place and belonging.

Laurence Aëgerter (1972), Composition Synesthétique III (Dürer), Silkscreened ultra chrome print, framed 25 x 19,5 cm Ed. 6 + 2 AP. Reference: Albrecht Dürer, Adam en Eva, 1504 coll. Rijksmuseum Amsterdam gravure, 25,1 19,2 cm.

Compositions Synesthétiques
Compositions Synesthétiques investigates the perception and interpretation of an artwork. Laurence Aëgerter superimposes geometric layers on top of some of her favorite masterpieces, reproduced in their original size. These layers in raised effect textures invite the viewer to touch the surface of the work. Following the principle of synesthesia, both senses of sight and tactility are simultaneously stimulated to enhance the perception of the artwork. This new series follows up on Aëgerter’s long term research as seen in Le Louvre, Het Apparaat, Hermitage the Modernists and (de)coding freedom, where she photographed paintings with spectators and objects becoming part of the works.

Diana Scherer (1971), Interwoven 03, 2016, Soil, Seed, Photography, fine art print, 140 x 80 cm.

Interwoven
Diana Scherer explores the relationship between man versus his natural environment and his desire to control nature. The starting point is the ambiguous tendency of man to cherish nature, but also to manipulate in a reckless way.
In collaboration with biologists Scherer went looking for a technique to control the growth of plant roots. She began to apply the "intelligence" of plants in her work. Scherer also want to make these hidden subterranean processes visible at all times. With the aid of the photographic medium the botanical model in her work is preserved and treasured, it is also greatly enlarged, by which details become visible that would not have been able to detect with the naked eye.

We hope you will be inspired by what these great artists have to offer you! From February 9 until February 12 Seelevel Gallery will attend Art Rotterdam.
