Johannes Vermeer was born in 1632 in Delft, the Netherlands. He never left the city. Vermeer grew up in a Protestant family. Because of his father being a professional art dealer, Vermeer came into contact with art at young age. In 1653 Vermeer married Catharina Bolnes, for whom he converted himself to Catholicism. Vermeer was to have a total of fifteen children. Also in 1653 Vermeer joined the Delft Guild of Saint Luke, along with painters as Paulus Potter and Emanuel de Witte.

Vermeer was known to only paint two canvases a year at most, for his entire oeuvre contains about fourty paintings. His main customers included fellow citizens and wealthy merchants. Most of his paintings were small in size. Vermeer passed away on December 15, 1675. He was buried in the Old Church of Delft, leaving eight minor-aged children behind.
