Mathurin Moreau was a French sculptor who was born in Dijon in 1822, he died in 1912. His neoclassical sculptures were shown at the Salon in 1848 for the first time. In 1897 he was awarded a medal of honour from the Salon. He was appointed a mayor of the XIXe arrondissement, Paris. In 1912 he was even honoured with a street name. He created various sculptures in Paris including, La Fileuse (Palais du Luxembourg), Cologne, 1865, (façade de la gare du Nord), L’Océanie, 1878 (Musée d’Orsay), Tomb of Zenobe Gramme, ca. 1901 (Père Lachaise Cemetery).
