Pedro Alvarez de Toledo was the first Spanish viceroy of Naples from 1532-1552. He completely rebuilt and modernized the city after the last attempt by France to retake the kingdom. This section of architecture still exists today as the “Spanish Quarter”. After failing to institute the Spanish Inquisition in Naples in 1547, he stepped down as viceroy and moved to Florence. There, his daughter Eleanor of Toledo, married Cosimo I de Medici and became the first Dutchess of Florence.
