In February 1864, René Boivin was born in Paris. He started his career as goldsmith at an early age and proved to excell in the fields of design and engraving especially. Around the year 1890 he made the investment to take over a number of different workshops, before establishing himself at the Rue St. Anastase. In 1893 he relocated to Rue Turbigo and married a woman named Jeanne Poiret, sister of renowned couturier Paul Poiret. She later turned out to become the first female jewelry designer of the 20th century and the couple worked together to create some of the most bold fashios of the 1900s.
After René Boivin passed away in 1917, it was Jeanne who took over the firm. She established herself in the Avenue de l'Opéra, together with Juliette Moutart and her daughter Germaine Boivin. This cooperation is known to have lasted for forty years. Between 1921 and 1932 Suzanne Belperron joined the women, creating signature pieces inspired by animals and nature, such as the Starfish(1936). Their jewels became well known. Upon Jeanne Boivin's death in 1959, the house was taken over by Louis Girard.
