Alexander Bobkin (1952), born in Siberia and based in Nijmegen since 1991, is an artist who embarks on a fascinating journey along the boundaries of reality through his paintings. His works are infused with a profound spiritual and mystical atmosphere, in which he transforms the everyday world into a source of deep meaning.

He elevates ordinary objects to symbols that capture the essence of their being, creating a mysterious and evocative environment. In Bobkin’s art, mundane encounters, the sorrow of a crying hare, or even the simple presence of a glass of water are transformed into small stories, rendered in oil on impressive canvases. Each painting is an invitation for the viewer to delve into the secrets of life.

A Journey to the hidden reality behind the visible image

Alexander Bobkin’s paintings invite deep reflection on the nature of reality. His work has the power to transform the visible world, revealing the unspoken relationships between objects, people, and ideas.

Each painting is a carefully constructed moment in which the artist searches for the core of his subject—an object, an emotion, or a human interaction. It is a process of distillation: removing unnecessary details to convey the pure essence.

Bobkin explores the limits of representation by going beyond what can be seen. He focuses on what might be—on the underlying dynamics of the world around us. In his work, color, form, and light play an unmistakable role as tools that guide the viewer toward a deeper dimension of meaning.

The everyday objects that populate his paintings are not presented as static entities, but as living beings interacting with the space and time of the canvas.

The power of Bobkin’s work lies in his ability to create a subtle tension: between the recognizable and the ineffable, between the physical and the metaphysical. The viewer is not simply confronted with a visual object; instead, a dynamic dialogue emerges, inviting the discovery of new meanings and perspectives.

Each painting offers the chance to see the familiar world in a different light and to unravel the hidden stories that lie within.

In “Whisper of the Earth, Silence of the Sky,” Alexander Bobkin takes us to a remarkable new world. The characters seem to radiate a kind of desolate despair but also appear serene at the same time.

They feel indigenous, alienating to the outsider. Workers, a child in a royal blue dress, a mother caring for her, an animal head on a human body, officials, and an admiral.

Mythical figures come together in a scene that feels warm yet shrouded in mystique. Who are they? What occupies their minds? The characters either blend into the background or stand out, leaving the viewer guessing where to focus their attention.

Thus, a performance is created where everyone can imagine their own protagonist and story. Above all these figures, a pristine azure sky looms, draped like a veil over them. Because whatever binds or divides them, they all sleep under the same sky. The air is silent, the earth whispers.
