Etching with aquatint made by Antoine-Jean Gros after the design of Carle Vernet. Published in 1811 in Paris by M. Guerin. Later hand-coloured. Measures 38 x 52.5 cm. The riots of the Revolution were over, it is the Napoleonic era. In this course de traîneaux the sleighs race over the ice. Ladies in fur hats sit with their hands in their sleeves at the front of the sleighs. You can hear the bells ringing. Gentlemen with tight trousers in their boots and top hats in the back, holding the reins tightly. In the background, citizens sway on their skates. Carle Vernet (1758-1836) was an avid horseman. Only a few days before his death at the age of seventy-eight, he was still seen racing, as if he were a proud young man. His love of horses is reflected in this cheerful performance. Price: 650,-
