De kunstenaar heeft dit werk opgedragen aan zijn vriend, de schilder Felix Ziem (1821-1911). Op de achterzijde staat geschreven:"A Ziem et sa fee de ses couleurs" - Über KünstlerNarcisse Diaz de la Pena was a French painter of the Barbizon school. He was born in Bordeaux and became an orphan at the age of ten. At fifteen he began working in a studio, where he painted porcelain. In 1831, he met Théodore Rousseau, who taught him a lot of techniques. He joined the Romantic movement influenced by Rousseau and Eugène Delacroix and in 1837 joined the Barbizon group. He exhibited his work regularly in the Salon de Paris and his work is now to be found in the Louvre.
